Cockburn Basketball Association is WA’s leading family basketball association and has been proudly operating since 1972.

The CBA has more than 2,100 playing members across the City of Cockburn, Fremantle and Melville, more than 250 junior and senior teams, 22 WA Basketball League teams, and is proudly a part of the NBL1 West competition.

The Challenge:

The Cockburn Basketball Association wanted to establish an All Abilities Program but were unsure where to start, despite previous discussions. WADSA is providing guidance on program planning and facility assessment. WADSA are now working together with CBA, with support from Basketball Australia, to develop a pilot program plan.

The How:

Through ongoing collaboration, WADSA are working with Cockburn Basketball Association (CBA) to develop an All Abilities Program plan. WADSA is providing support with policies, procedures, and ensuring venue accessibility to foster community engagement within the basketball environment. As part of this partnership, WADSA delivered an inclusion training workshop attended by CBA’s CEO, coaches, umpires, and volunteers. The workshop covered barriers to inclusion, effective communication strategies, and methods for modification and adaptation. Participants applied these concepts by designing an adapted skills session, which they then implemented in a modified basketball game.

Additionally, WADSA is supporting CBA in securing funding for equipment essential to delivering the All Abilities Program.

” Our focus is on helping CBA create a sustainable program for long-term success. WADSA will continue to assist with the planning and implementation stages, ensuring the program grows and remains inclusive for all participants.”

” The Cockburn Cougars are proud to partner with the WA Disabled Sports Association (WADSA) through their Inclusion Support Services. Our coaches and volunteers recently participated in a Disability Inclusion Workshop, where WADSA staff provided valuable training, upskilling, and ongoing support. This collaboration has been instrumental in shaping a more inclusive environment at our club. As a result, we’re excited to announce the successful launch of our Ability Hoops program, creating new opportunities for athletes of all abilities to get involved in the game! ”
