WADSA recently ventured across to Rottnest Island, just off the coast of Western Australia for our most popular over 18’s Xperience! Our 4-day skills-based experience focused on team building through water sports, building confidence on a stand-up paddle board, competitive beach cricket, a visit to the bowls club and island hopping!

A Splash of Fun: Aqua Sports and Paddle Boarding

Mornings on Rottnest started with a combination of swim, paddle, SUP and snorkeling. For many, the highlight was stand-up paddle boarding —a great achievement by Elliot that highlighted his determination and resilience.

Beachside Bliss: Cricket and Exploration

Participants enjoyed a competitive game of beach cricket resulting in hand’ eye coordination skills and progressed into who can hit the ball furthest into the ocean.

Skills in Action: Lawn Bowls, Island Hopping and Fishing

Meanwhile, the hop on/off Quokka bus tour gave everyone the chance to explore the island’s scenic beauty at their own pace.

Skills achieved:

  • Encouraged our participants to communicate with each other whilst collectively planning their island stops.
  • Consideration for others: engaging with each other and compromising on what others wanted to do.

On the island’s lush greens, participants also had the opportunity to attend the lawn bowls club.

Skills achieved:

  • Demonstration in leadership; teaching others how to hold the bowls.
  • Motivating others to get involved: Big shout out to Shayne for teaching us the way and being an excellent motivator for those that were a bit sleepy that morning!

Afternoons were packed with arts and crafts as well as beach fishing. With guidance and patience from our superstar fisherman Nic.

Skills achieved:

  • Improved their angling techniques and learnt the value of persistence.

“This is my second camp, coming to Rotto has greatly improved my confidence to meet others. I have met likeminded people with a disability. I love helping in the camp kitchen as it has allowed me to bond with new friends that I will meet up with outside of camp.”
