Creating truly inclusive sporting environments begins with giving coaches and volunteers the skills, confidence and knowledge to support participants of all abilities.
WADSA recently partnered with Gymnastics WA to deliver an Inclusive Sport Workshop for coaches, volunteers and club representatives from gymnastics clubs across Western Australia. The workshop provided practical guidance on creating welcoming and accessible programs for people with disability, while helping participants develop a greater understanding of inclusive practice in community sport.
Throughout the session, attendees explored a range of topics including disability awareness, adapting activities to meet individual needs, effective communication strategies, and building positive sporting environments where everyone feels valued and supported.
A key focus of the workshop was understanding and managing behaviours that may arise during participation. Coaches and volunteers discussed practical approaches to behaviour support, the importance of recognising individual needs, and strategies to open discussion with families about shared supportive strategies.
Participants also examined how small modifications can make a significant difference. From adjusting equipment and activities to tailoring coaching approaches and session delivery, the workshop demonstrated how flexibility and creativity can help remove barriers and create meaningful opportunities for participation.
The workshop reflects the shared commitment of WADSA and Gymnastics WA to increasing access to sport and recreation for people with disability across Western Australia. By equipping clubs with practical tools and inclusive strategies, the partnership is helping to create more opportunities for people of all abilities to experience the physical, social and wellbeing benefits of gymnastics.
