The workshop provided a valuable opportunity for teachers to build their confidence, knowledge, and practical skills in supporting children with disability within their classrooms and school communities. With educators travelling from across the state, the session fostered meaningful discussion, shared learning, and collaboration around creating more inclusive educational environments.

Throughout the workshop, participants explored practical strategies for working with children with disability, including adapting and scaling activities to ensure all students can participate meaningfully alongside their peers. Teachers were encouraged to consider how small adjustments can make a significant difference to a child’s experience, engagement, and sense of belonging.

A key focus of the session was building confidence in communicating with students and parents about the need for reasonable accommodations. Educators explored the importance of framing supports, sensory breaks, and activity modifications as essential tools that enable participation and learning, rather than as rewards or play opportunities. This helps build understanding, reduce stigma, and create more inclusive learning environments.

The interactive workshop also provided opportunities for participants to share experiences, ask questions, and problem-solve real-world scenarios they encounter in their classrooms. By combining practical tools with open discussion, the session aimed to equip teachers with strategies they could immediately implement within their own settings, and even included an opportunity to test our communication in an activity simulating instructing a person with vision impairment.

At WADSA, we believe that inclusion is everyone’s responsibility, and educators play a vital role in creating environments where every child feels valued, supported, and able to participate. We thank the Montessori Teachers Association and all participating educators for their commitment to inclusive practice and look forward to continuing to support schools across Western Australia on their inclusion journey.
