WADSA is proud to launch the State of the Sector Report: Sport and Active Recreation for People with Disability in Western Australia.
The report brings together the experiences of people with disability, families and carers with insights from organisations across sport, recreation, disability, government and the broader community to build a clearer picture of participation across WA.
It highlights the great work already happening across our State, while also identifying the barriers that continue to make participation difficult. These include fragmented pathways, cost and transport, access to appropriate support, workforce capability, regional inequity and the sustainability of inclusive opportunities.
A key message from the report is that there is no single pathway to participation. Mainstream sport, disability-specific sport, active recreation and supported participation all have an important role in providing people with disability with genuine choice and opportunities to participate.
The report also reinforces that sport and active recreation are about much more than being active. They contribute to health and wellbeing, confidence, social connection, independence and a sense of belonging within our communities.
For WADSA, the release of the report is an important step — but it is not the end point.
We will use these findings to continue working alongside people with disability, our member organisations, government and sector partners to help shape the future of sport and active recreation for people with disability in WA.
